Newest addition in town – Academic Evangelist

Please welcome Andrew Parsons, whom have recently joined the Microsoft Education Team, as Academic Evangelist. I must admit that as with all other Microsoft evangelists, their title is pretty vague. But there’s one thing we know for sure – there’s going to be funky stuff happening.

He’s mostly an IT guy who’s been around for a while, and previously worked for Readify, a Microsoft consulting and training company. Be sure to check out his blog, his other blog, and his micro blog. Oh, and did I mention that he’s got a website as well?

Anyhow, what does this mean for us Uni students? As I said before, we can rest assured that funky stuff is going to happen, and much more focus and livelihood from many academic programs like Microsoft Student Partners, DreamSpark, Students2Business, Imagine Cup and more!

MACH Student Info Day @ Microsoft – Pushed Forward!

The date for the upcoming MACH information day for students has been pushed forward from 10 Sep 08. The new date for this event is Friday 22 Aug 08. For those who’ve already registered with Alistair, remember to update your diaries!

You’ve used our software, you’ve played our games, and you’ve even blamed late assignments on us… so now it is time to see what life is really like inside Microsoft.

MACH is a group of recent graduates working at Microsoft, taking part in the accelerated careers program. They’re here to talk to you about their experiences with the MACH program and how they got into Microsoft. Believe it or not, you don’t have to be doing IT. They take on people from Sales, HR, Finance, Marketing, Legal and Corporate Affairs as well!

It’s your chance to see where your degree can take you, have a tour of Microsoft Australia’s HQ plus have a big screen XBox gaming session right appropriately at Microsoft.

Location: XBox Gaming Room @ Microsoft Head Office, 1 Epping Rd, North Ryde

Date and Time: Friday 22nd August, 1:30pm

Live Mesh is open

Microsoft’s Live Mesh is a relatively new tool to keep your life in sync. These days, everyone has more than one gadget – be it a laptop, PC, Mac or mobile device(s). Live Mesh makes it so simple to use all those devices together, keeping them in sync.

Until recently, many people have signed up to participate in the tech preview program. But unfortunately, places are hard to come by and most miss out. There’s even been a website for people to ask for invitations!

But not to worry – It’s all good now. In the latest Mesh email update, Microsoft’s announced that some pretty neat ‘fixes’:

Fixes

  • Raised the limit on the total number of customers we’ll allow to access the Live Mesh Tech Preview.
  • Expanded availability: you can sign up directly, with no waiting list, if your country/region is the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand.
  • Removed the limit on the number of Live Mesh invitations you have. Invite new friends and family members to the Live Mesh Tech Preview.

So definitely good news to all of us. But I guess that means the ShareMesh website is now obsolete.

SOAK it up! We have a winner for Imagine Cup 08

Not long ago, several of my friends were spending quality time over in Paris, where they ran in the final round of Imagine Cup 2008.

I’d like to give my personal congratulations to my friend Long Zheng fellow MSPs David Burela, Ed Hooper, and Dimaz Pramudya, for their amazing effort in this competition. Armed with their entry “SOAK” in software design, they’ve reached the top and won themselves the grand prize of $15,000 plus bragging rights.

See their final presentation and prize presentation after the break!
