Awesome visits to IT companies this week!

Macquarie up close

We have had a great time this week, and thank you to everyone whom attended. This Macquarie sign is from the top of their new “activity-based” building at Shelley St. For those who missed out, it’s not like any other office buildings you’ve ever seen before. Keep an eye out for when SUITS runs another one of these extraordinary visits again perhaps next year!

I want to take this opportunity to thank Will from Google, Robyn from Atlassian and Larissa from our sponsor Optiver whom have worked with me throughout the time leading up. A special thanks goes to Anna from Macquarie because she has made our visit possible even at such short notice! They have put in so much effect to make this all possible, and it’s easy for this effort to go unnoticed.

I promised to make the photos available, and here it is after the break. I’ve only included low-res photos here, but feel free to click through to get to the full quality photos. The links and resources are also after the break.

Feedback. I’d love to know what you thought about this event. Send me an email with any thoughts or comments, in particular:

  1. What did you get out of the day?
  2. Which parts did you like best (and/or didn’t like), and why?
  3. How can we make this event even better for next time?

Public Lecture on the Australian Internet Filtering Scheme

Padlock This Friday, there’ll be a public lecture discussing the Australian Filtering Scheme. It’s been a hot topic for a while now, and it’s gathering momentum. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) TV program Q&A had recently featured this particular issue last Thursday 26 Mar 09 in Melbourne.

The lecture will be delivered by Associate Professor Bjorn Landfeldt (my thesis supervisor!) from School of IT, University of Sydney. His comments were also featured in the Herald.

Here’s more details, from the school’s news page:

Speaker: Associate Professor Bjorn Landfeldt, School of Information Technologies, The University of Sydney

Time: Friday 3 April 2009, 4:00-5:00pm

Location: The University of Sydney, PNR Building, Farrell Lecture Theatre

Abstract
The Australian government is currently planning to introduce mandatory Internet content filtering. The move would clearly set Australia aside from all other democratic nations in the world. The initial purpose of this scheme was to protect Australian children from accessing unsuitable material such as child pornography.

Jumpstart and Demystify your Live

There’s been so much hype and so much talk revolving around Microsoft’s Live Services. Live Mesh has even made it to the keynote feature of this year’s TechEd in Sydney. So what is Live? Simply put, Windows Live is a collection of services that we use every day from Live Messenger (MSN) to Live Mail, Live Search, Live Maps, and pretty much everything else that has the word ‘Live’ in it.

What Microsoft is doing though, is more than just providing these services – they’re also making it easy for people to make use of creatively, building on top of them as a platform. But at the speed they come in, it’s pretty easy to become lost in this strange new world.

So that’s were Live Services Jumpstart 2009 come into play. It’s a FREE 2-day training session that’s coming to 11 cities around the world, dedicated to demystifying all things to do with Live Services and the hottest new Software + Services architecture.

So Sydney’s pretty lucky to be one of these 11 cities to host this event, on 8 – 9 Dec 08, 8:30am – 6:30pm, at Four Points Sheraton, Darling Harbour. Since this is the ultimate place to get free in-depth technical training, spaces are limited -Register now!

Have you registered for the greatest PC and Games Expo yet?

I’m talking about Atomic Live 2008. It’s a day where so many PC and Games enthusiasts come together to witness some of the most amazing feats in history. If you’re a bit of a hardware guy, then you must go to this FREE event.

I’ve already registered for it, and hope that in the unlikely event that I would actually win the 22″ LCD Monitor or PS3 as an added bonus! From previous experience at Atomic Live 2005 and 2007, it’s going to be a really good day/

Here’s the formal description of the expo:

Atomic LIVE 2008 is an all-day PC, gaming and tech fun-fest, put on for you to catch up on the latest technological innovations from global market leaders, win cool prizes play computer games, learn a little bit about the industry & leading trends, and maybe even pick up some career advice. It’s everything that makes the Atomic magazine & website so great, gathered under one roof.

So what actually happens?

Well there’s so much going on it’s nuts! There’s the grand finals of the World Gamemasters Tournament (WGT), a massive and free LAN party that’s got FarCry 2 for the very first time in Australia, cosplay, competitions including the PC speedbuilding competition, and giveaways of all shapes and sizes.
