Upgrading computer without reinstalling Windows

D845GERG2 MotherboardOne question that sometimes gets asked is, “How easy is it to upgrade a computer?” The answer is that it’s often quite simple (for someone who knows how to take apart a computer and replace parts). For others, just let your techie friends do the work.

Upgrading a computer can be a matter of less than an hour, including testing. This includes installing a new hard drive, adding more memory, etc. There are times, though, when upgrading a computer is not a simple task. One of the complications in upgrading a computer arises when your try to upgrade your CPU or motherboard, or both. It’s because Windows doesn’t like it when the core system hardware is changed. It might not even work at all.

But there’s a way around having to reinstalling Windows.

Lenovo X200 Tablet PC in shop and priced right now!

As evidence of X200 Tablet PC accumulates over the internet, it seems inevitable that this will eventually join the X61 Tablet in Lenovo’s line of ultraportable tablets.

BLT X200 Tablet

Bottom Line Telecommunications have already catalogued the X200 Tablets, complete with manufacturer part numbers. It appears that the tablets will have the “performance series” of the Core 2 Duo, the T9400 CPU, rather than what I have hoped for: “power optimised” P9500.

The X200 Tablet also appears to offer a multitouch screen variant just like the X61 Tablet counterpart. The first pricing seen to be around the $1500 mark.

Update: See the Engadget hands-on of the X200 tablet!

Unboxing the BenQ FP222W LCD Monitor

In the beginning, there was a box:

Which had some specifications on it.

But when the box was opened…

Reviving the NetComm NB1300 Plus 4

Not long ago, I dug up an old ADSL modem, the NetComm NB1300 Plus 4. I remember that it was working a while back, but suddenly stopped working. Since I had some spare time on my hands, I thought I might want to see what I can do about it.

This can also be used as a fully illustrated, step-by-step guide to the procedure I used in order to revive the ADSL modem.

Signs and Symptoms

I’m assuming we know what a working ADSL modem looks like. You know, like it powers on, and lights blink. But with this one, the power light comes on, but nothing else really works. The nice thing is, when I plug in a LAN cable to the LAN ports, it’ll still light up and make the connection and I think it’ll still work as a 4-port switch. Maybe.

NetComm02

But I don’t just want a 4-port switch, I want to fix it and get the modem back. I searched the internet, and found a possible solution at the Whirlpool forums.

Cause

Reading through most of the posts on the forum, it appears that this can happen at any time with no prior warning. It seems as though the flash memory chip can suddenly lose its data, since it supposedly can be fixed by reflashing it.

How to Repair the ADSL Modem

So let’s go through how I’ve managed to revive this ADSL modem, back to its working order.
